NWKA got a good haul at a home competition with it taking place at Birchwood Tennis Complex. This was George Malones first interclub competition and is only 6 years old which made him one of the youngest competitors of the tournament. He couldn’t quite get a medal but he was very brave to take part in 9 years and under 4th kyu and below kata and kumite. He was joined by 9 year old Rhys Daly who took part in the same sections but didn’t place either. However he put on an improved performance.
Sean Johnson and Harry Tooley both took part in the 10-12 years 3rd kyu and above kata with their first competition but didn’t come away with anything this time.
Northen Open Classic 2 2015
Taylor Greenough participated in the 10-12 years 3rd kyu and above kata but got bronze in her kumite. She only just got beat by decision in the semi finals by the girl who got gold which was also an amazing fight.

They all competed in the team kumite where they got themselves a silver.

englishchamps2015
Well done to Sam Kletz on another 2nd place in the disability Kata section, making him a 3 times silver medalist at national level.
Other squad performances included Taylor Greenough winning her first round of Kata and was faced with much bigger opponents in her Kumite Category.
Zach Scott had to face a European Champion and managed a 5th place in the Senior -84kg, Luke Scott also came 5th in the senior Kumite -75kg and looking back on video evidence afterwards, he was close to the Bronze. Luke also lost his Kata in the first round to a European champion but performed his way through repechage finishing 7th, Alex Hodge had a difficult side to his draw which would match him up with lots of international medalist and ended up with a first round defeat.
The Academy would like to congratulate our Association club from Southern England, Tony Grays SKDF on a Cadet Kumite Bronze by James Eade and Senior Kumite Bronze by Lee Rose

UK Open Championships

Zach Scott attended the UK open in Dudley entering three categories; senior -84kg, open weight and the champions cup. The latter was a prize money event. He earned a bronze in -84kg which was ended by a very close match. The open weight was the pinnacle of his performance as he gained a gold after a close final. The champions cup ended in the first round with a close but controversial bout.

English Kyu Grade Championships

Eng Kyu Grade 2015
Congratulations to Samuel Kletz at the National Kyu Grade Championships, winning another Silver medal placing at his Second competition. Sam competed in the Disability Kata event and narrowly missed out on the Gold, Keep plugging away Sam!

Other competitors included Reece Daly in his first competition and Sean Johnson, both in the 9 years and under kata, Reece also made it through to the second round of the Kata and also showed a brave performance in his first Kumite match.

Well done to the small squad, it was a great day and lots of potential was shown. The competition was held on Sunday 25th January at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield

Central England International Open

A small squad of 4 entered the Central England International Open, well done to Rachel Traverse who claimed a bronze in her Kumite Category. It was Thomas Palmer’s 2nd inter club tournament and he did very well in both Kata and Kumite. NWKA instructors Zach Scott and Alex Hodge fought hard in their Kumite events, but they went out to tough opposition who were mostly former world and European medalists.

East Yorkshire Open

3 members went to the East Yorkshire open in Hull and came way with 1 gold and 1 bronze.
Rachel traverse went on to win gold in the kumite after an impressive performance throughout every single round.
Melissa Dargue competed in her kyu grades kumite category. She narrowly lost her first fight however there were plenty of points that she definitely should have scored. She got a bronze for her well deserved efforts.
Zach Scott competed in his senior kumite event. After winning his first fight, he went on to just miss out on his second.

UK Open Championships

Zach Scott competed in the open weight and -84kg category. He just missed out in the first round of -84kg but however picked up a bronze. In the open weight, he flew through his first fight beating his opponent 8-0. The final was close however losing on decision meaning a silver.

British International Open

BKF_Logo_New
3 students competed in this major home tournament, achieving 1 gold, 2 bronze. Taylor greenough started off the day by winning a bronze in kata by losing to the winner by split decision (3-2 flags) a fantastic result. She fought hard in both her Kumite events but the fights didn’t quite go her way.
Rachel traverse went out 2nd round in her kata and was also put out by the champion of both her kumite categories (rachel was one of the youngest in her group however the champ would have been too old the week after).
Zach Scott competed in three kumite categories: U21 + 78kg, senior -84kg and open weight.
In his U21, he won gold after a round robin with a Scottish international fighter (British champion) and an Irish international fighter. In -84kg, he was narrowly put out by the winner of the category, but then won his side of repechage to scoop bronze. In open weight, he won his first fight but then lost by decision in his second fight, just missing out on a bronze medal.

Central England Karate Championships

Central England Championships

Taylor Greenough, Sam Anderton, Melissa Dargue and Coach Zach Scott entered the Central England Karate Championships. Zach, Taylor and Sam all performed well but sadly no results. However, Melissa as her second time competing, won gold in the 5th Kyu and below Ladies Kumite.

English Karate Federation National Kyu Grade Championships

IMG_1007Sunday 26th January 2014
Ponds Forge Sports Centre, Sheffield
Silver for Samuel Kletz in his first Kata Competition. Sam entered the Physical Disability Kata Category. He has been hard at work building his fitness and muscular strength alongside his Kata training. This is a great example of what anyone can achieve with hard work and Karate can be a great outlet for that. “I have witnessed that Sam has improved tremendously over the last 2 years. He has worked hard improving his strength and confidence. I am very pleased with his growing work ethic. Keep it up Sam this is a work in progress”.
Niall Ashcroft and Sean Johnson competed in the 9 years and under Kata. This was Niall’s first Kata competition and he showed brave performance. Sean Johnson made it through the first round with 3 flags and just missed out with a 2 to 1 decision in the second round. “Well done lads keep training hard you have both achieved great gains”.
This was also the first attempt for Melissa Dargue in the Senior Kumite. She gave a strong attitude and only lost by decision at the end and we could all see the flags could have gone either way. “Mel trains 3 to 4 times a week, it can only mean success is imminent, Well done Mel”.

 English National Karate Championships 2010

The championships was held at Ponds Forge Leisure Centre Sheffield by The English Karate Federation (the official recognised governing body)

The North West Karate Academy took a squad of 11 for this two day event

Day one Saturday 25th April, the day started great with a Silver and bronze in team Kata 10-13yrs, Competitors Matthew Ayres, Daniel Prior, Sam Deakin took the silver with Matthew Gornall, Rebecca Duff, Sophie Corless taking Bronze.

Individual success was achieved by Natalie Charlton taking Bronze in the 16-17yrs Kata.

Day two Sunday 26th April, again the day started in real overdrive with Natalie Charlton continuing her top form with the ultimate result Gold in the 16-17yrs Kumite (fighting). Natalies day was far from over, entering the seniors Kumite resulting in a very prestigious Bronze.

Next up was Zach Scott and Gus Johnston representing the 16-17yrs heavy weights producing a double Bronze to add to the medal growing tally. They to were not content to let it end there producing an excellent Silver result in the 16-17yrs team Kumite even though they were a fighter short on the 3 man line up.

Last to enter the arena was Alex Hodge in the Senior Kumite, he had to fight hard from start to finish resulting in a close final, it wasn’t to be a Golden day this time for Alex but a Silver to be proud of.

Finally a worthy mention to Samantha Anderton who fought her heart out but was eventually pipped at the last second of her bout by a single punch and so missing out of a Bronze in the Kumite.

Coach Steve Scott said the squad continue to inspire each other, their support at the competition and in training is a vital component to success that and of course lots of hard work

NWKA Club Kata Tournament 2009

The 20th Club tournament had a great response with 99 competitors taking part. All had been working hard on their selected katas. There were lots of categories based on age, grade and sex.

The rounds went smoothly and the children showed great courage. Most were performing for the first time infront of Parents and Grandparents. Everybody showed their appreciation with lots of applause for all the childrens impressive efforts not just their own child.

We made excellant time on the tournament which enabled everyone to relax and enjoy the display by the squad. The squad demonstrated a wide range of disciplines within Karate and especially our Clubs extensive syllabus.

The day finished with all the students receiving their commemorative trophies plus the usual 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies. Also our annual student of the year awards were given. Zach Scott was promoted from Junior to Senior Club Assistant and May Bateman was promoted from Senior Club Assistant to Junior Instructor. Well done to them.

The traditional group photographs took place with all the childrens beaming faces.

British Karate National Championships

British-National-Karate-Championships-2008

The official British Karate Championships event was held at Ponds Forge Sheffield over 2 days. Each day lasted 15 hours, not for the faint hearted. Itself an endurance for coach, competitors and parents.

Most students were moving up age groups firstly Team Kata, 2 silvers in senior male and female team which is a new age group of 14yrs and above. Well done to Zach Scott and Becky Mclorie both 14 yrs old taking part in senior team kata they joined more experienced senior performers of Luke Scott, Alex Hodge, Nicole Halsall, and Natalie Charlton both teams did strong and polished performances.

Next up was girl’s team of Danielle Sawer, Samantha Anderton, Lydia Coleman and boys team of Ben Osborne, John Charlton, and James Oxley in the under 15s teams and both took bronze in there respective categories; they are all only 12yrs old and show great promise for the future. There success was also joined by Mathew Aryes in the pee wee 9 yrs and under taking bronze in the individual as a follower to his silver in the English earlier this year.

The girl’s team then turned their attention to Kumite (fighting) in the 10-13yrs Team joined with 11 yr old Stephanie Bateman took bronze with a fiery performance. In the 16-17yrs teams Nicole Halsall and Natalie Charlton went ahead despite only a 2 person team in a 3 person category to take bronze.

Gus Johnston showed a gutsy performance in his 14-15yrs old Kumite category to take bronze. Natalie Charlton got one better taking it to the wire with an extended final bout going to sudden death to take a well deserved silver.
