English National Championships
The English National Championships took place at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Leisure Centre On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of April.
On the Saturday Samuel Kletz took gold in the Physical Disability Kata Category. Sam 19 years of age has Cerebral palsy. This was Sam’s fourth attempt at gaining the English title, he took two Silvers in 2015 and one in 2014.
His determination and hard work has truly paid off and he got a unanimous decision from all five Judges. Sam trains three sessions a week at the North West Karate Academy and has done so for the last five years, he also works out at the local gym for extra strength and fitness training.
Sam is a very popular student in the adult class at the Academy. Chief Instructor Steve Scott says “Sam’s confidence is growing year by year and he is a pleasure to teach. He has become an inspiration to his fellow training partners and equally to the Academy Instructors”
That inspiration was put to good use on day two when brothers Luke Scott and Zach Scott, who were members of the Association team took a Bronze in the Kumite despite only having three fighters in the five man team event.
North East Open
Instructor Zach Scott took part in the North East Open Karate Championships and took Gold in the Men Senior Kumite.
He won his first fight 8-0 after 45 seconds, second fight 3-0 and won 0-0 (4-1 on flags) in the final.

Rhys Daly competed at the North of England Karate Championships. First up was the 8-9 boys, 3rd kyu and above kata. Rhys performed a solid Pinan Godan in the first round, but was unfortunately pitted against a very strong opponent, and was knocked out with 3 straight flags.
Next up in Kumite Rhys was determined to make amends, He won the first bout 2-0, scoring a crunching round kick to the back before seeing the bout out with good defensive composure.
In the semis Rhys fought a tougher oppenent, The bout was closely fought and Rhys took an early lead, catching the opponents round kick before knocking him to the ground with strong a punch. However with 15 seconds to go Rhys got caught with his guard down and received a bronze medal for his well deserved efforts.
Northern Open Classic
NWKA got a good haul at a home competition with it taking place at Birchwood Tennis Complex. This was George Malones first interclub competition and is only 6 years old which made him one of the youngest competitors of the tournament. He couldn’t quite get a medal but he was very brave to take part in 9 years and under 4th kyu and below kata and kumite. He was joined by 9 year old Rhys Daly who took part in the same sections but didn’t place either. However he put on an improved performance.
Sean Johnson and Harry Tooley both took part in the 10-12 years 3rd kyu and above kata with their first competition but didn’t come away with anything this time.
Taylor Greenough participated in the 10-12 years 3rd kyu and above kata but got bronze in her kumite. She only just got beat by decision in the semi finals by the girl who got gold which was also an amazing fight.

They all competed in the team kumite where they got themselves a silver.

Zach Scott had to face a European Champion and managed a 5th place in the Senior -84kg, Luke Scott also came 5th in the senior Kumite -75kg and looking back on video evidence afterwards, he was close to the Bronze. Luke also lost his Kata in the first round to a European champion but performed his way through repechage finishing 7th, Alex Hodge had a difficult side to his draw which would match him up with lots of international medalist and ended up with a first round defeat.
The Academy would like to congratulate our Association club from Southern England, Tony Grays SKDF on a Cadet Kumite Bronze by James Eade and Senior Kumite Bronze by Lee Rose
UK Open Championships
Zach Scott attended the UK open in Dudley entering three categories; senior -84kg, open weight and the champions cup. The latter was a prize money event. The champions cup ended in the first round with a close but controversial bout.
English Kyu Grade Championships

Rachel traverse went on to win gold in the kumite after an impressive performance throughout every single round.

British International Open
3 students competed in this major home tournament, achieving 1 gold, 2 bronze. Taylor greenough started off the day by winning a bronze in kata by losing to the winner by split decision (3-2 flags) a fantastic result. She fought hard in both her Kumite events but the fights didn’t quite go her way.
Rachel traverse went out 2nd round in her kata and was also put out by the champion of both her kumite categories (rachel was one of the youngest in her group however the champ would have been too old the week after).
Zach Scott competed in three kumite categories: U21 + 78kg, senior -84kg and open weight.
In his U21, he won gold after a round robin with a Scottish international fighter (British champion) and an Irish international fighter. In -84kg, he was narrowly put out by the winner of the category, but then won his side of repechage to scoop bronze. In open weight, he won his first fight but then lost by decision in his second fight, just missing out on a bronze medal.

Dutch Open Karate1 Premier League
Good luck to Zach Scott competing in the Dutch Premier League event with 729 registered athletes from 55 countries and over 80 of which in Zach’s category, it promises to be a tough event over Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 March 2014 in Almere, the Netherlands.

English Karate Federation National Kyu Grade Championships
Sunday 26th January 2014
Ponds Forge Sports Centre, Sheffield
Silver for Samuel Kletz in his first Kata Competition. Sam entered the Physical Disability Kata Category. He has been hard at work building his fitness and muscular strength alongside his Kata training. This is a great example of what anyone can achieve with hard work and Karate can be a great outlet for that. “I have witnessed that Sam has improved tremendously over the last 2 years. He has worked hard improving his strength and confidence. I am very pleased with his growing work ethic. Keep it up Sam this is a work in progress”.
Niall Ashcroft and Sean Johnson competed in the 9 years and under Kata. This was Niall’s first Kata competition and he showed brave performance. Sean Johnson made it through the first round with 3 flags and just missed out with a 2 to 1 decision in the second round. “Well done lads keep training hard you have both achieved great gains”.
This was also the first attempt for Melissa Dargue in the Senior Kumite. She gave a strong attitude and only lost by decision at the end and we could all see the flags could have gone either way. “Mel trains 3 to 4 times a week, it can only mean success is imminent, Well done Mel”.
Wasquehal International Open in France
Good luck to Zach Scott who is competing in the Wasquehal Open in France representing the official England Team. The competition is one of the toughest in Europe outside of the Karate 1 Premier League. Zach who has just turned 20 is up against some of the World’s top Heavyweights. In the 16-17yrs teams Nicole Halsall and Natalie Charlton went ahead despite only a 2 person team in a 3 person category to take bronze.
Gus Johnston showed a gutsy performance in his 14-15yrs old Kumite category to take bronze. Natalie Charlton got one better taking it to the wire with an extended final bout going to sudden death to take a well deserved silver.
