Adult Kyu/Dan Grades are graded on an extensive range Kata, Sport Kumite, Self Defence Kumite, Padwork, Takedowns, Escapes, Submissions and other fundamental aspects of Karate.
Belts should not be looked at as the main purpose of Karate. However, Gradings are a great tool to develop character by challenging an individual. They promote discipline and increase resilience.
The Children’s Grades are broken up into Basics, Kata, Sport Kumite and Padwork.
As you can see, Children are not graded on as many aspects as the Adult Kyu Grades. Therefore, they wear belts with white stripes through the middle to depict the Children’s Belt. Please refer to the conversion chart below for better understanding.
It is possible for a younger student to transition to the Adult Grades once they are training in the more Senior Classes and can show maturity.
